| When crash helmets became compulsory wear for motor racing, the majority of leading motor racing drivers purchased their helmets from Herbert Johnson, the hatters in London’s Bond Street. The Herbert Johnson crash helmet had been developed in the 1930’s by Geoffery Glazier, a director of Herbert
Johnson, Specially for Lt Col ‘Goldie’ Gardner, for motor racing and his various speed record attempts in MG’s. The wearing of helmets was optional for motor racing until January 1952 when their use became compulsory for the first time. The Herbert Johnson helmet was favored by leading drivers throughout the world because it was as safe as anything then available, light in weight and very good looking! The helmet is made from what in the trade, is known as gossamer or ‘goss’. Gossamer is made from strips of linen which have been soaked in shellac to harden; these are then ironed to the helmet ‘form’, gradually building up a multi layered and extremely strong shell. This is then fitted inside with a comfortable leather headband and straps that keeps a space between the head and the outer shell of the helmet. Strong canvas neck and ear flaps are added, with a leather chin strap that secures the helmet on the head. The helmet has a peak and short leather loop at the back to retain the strap of the goggles. The helmet was made for Herbert Johnson by a specialist hat manufacturer, who was eventually taken over by Patey Ltd, the leading makers of hand made protective headwear for equestrian riding. In 1996 Patey were approached by Stirling Moss to see if a helmet could be made to replace his old Herbert Johnson from the 1960’s. They were delighted to oblige as not only did they have the original tooling for the helmets but also the skilled craftsman, Ray Corne, who used to make the original helmets in the 50’s and 60’s. Even though the hand made helmet does not accord with the current standards for motor racing purposes, Stirling Moss was thrilled and has been wearing his new helmet for demonstration runs since then. The helmet can be specified in a natural finish, or can be painted to your own requirements. Please supply head measurements when ordering Each helmet is hand made to order so please allow up to 12 weeks for shipment. Helmets are not suited for competition use………. CALL FOR PRICES
